An Autel Navigation System Error Code (frequently logged under system event Code 102310) indicates that the flight controller can no longer reliably calculate the drone’s spatial position, velocity, or heading. This occurs when conflicting data streams emerge among the inertial measurement unit (IMU), electronic compass (magnetometer), and GNSS satellite receiver. When this fault triggers, the aircraft disables autonomous flight features and drops into manual Attitude (ATTI) mode.
Fast Fix
Move the drone at least 30 feet away from reinforced concrete, metal fences, parked cars, or underground utilities. Place the aircraft on a completely level surface, power cycle the battery, let it acquire a minimum of 12 satellites, and perform both a fresh compass calibration and an IMU calibration via the Autel Explorer settings menu.
Quick Safety Snapshot
- Severity: High to Critical
- Safe to Fly: No (the drone cannot hold its position and will drift with the wind)
- Primary Cause: Localized magnetic interference, corrupted IMU bias, operating in satellite shadow zones, or mechanical shock to internal sensor mounts
- Immediate Action: If this occurs in flight, immediately switch your focus to manual stick flying. The drone will drift with wind currents; counter the drift manually and land as soon as practical.
What the Navigation System Error Means
Stable multirotor flight requires sensor fusion. The flight controller runs a software algorithm (an Extended Kalman Filter) that blends readings from multiple separate sensors:
- The GNSS Receiver: Provides absolute geographic coordinates and ground velocity.
- The IMU (Accelerometers and Gyroscopes): Measures angular rate, tilt, and linear acceleration hundreds of times per second.
- The Compass (Magnetometer): Establishes absolute magnetic heading.
- The Barometer: Tracks atmospheric pressure changes to govern vertical altitude.
When the readings from these sensors contradict each other—for example, if the compass reports the drone is facing North, but the GPS velocity vector shows movement heading East while the IMU detects zero yaw rotation—the navigation filter fails its integrity check. Rather than making unpredictable maneuvers, the drone triggers a Navigation System Error and disables satellite-assisted hover.
Diagnostic Path: Identify the Conflicting Sensor
Use the Autel Explorer sensor status page to identify which sensor triggered the system warning:

1. Compass Status Abnormal
If the compass reading is fluctuating or the app indicates “Compass Interference,” magnetic distortions are twisting the heading calculation.
- Do not calibrate the compass on concrete driveways or patios containing steel rebar. Move to a natural dirt or grassy field.
- If recalibration fails to solve the warning, refer to the diagnostic steps in Autel Error Code 102003 Compass Error.
2. IMU Status Flags Calibration or Initialization Error
If the IMU indicators show abnormal bias bars or fail the startup check:
- The drone may have been moved or vibrated during the startup self-check.
- If the IMU was calibrated while warm or on an unlevel surface, its baseline offsets are incorrect. Step through Autel Error Code 102010 IMU Error.
3. Low Satellite Count or GPS Velocity Glitches
If the drone shows fewer than 10 to 12 connected satellites, or if satellite counts rapidly fluctuate:
- The aircraft does not have a 3D satellite lock. Without solid GNSS signals, any minor sensor discrepancy will trigger a navigation drop. See Autel Error Code 102000 GPS Signal Weak.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Step 1: Clear Environmental Magnetic Distortions
Most navigation errors on startup stem from ambient magnetic fields corrupting the compass:
- Power down the drone.
- Relocate the aircraft away from vehicles, reinforced concrete pads, underground pipes, and high-voltage power lines.
- Power the drone on while keeping it completely stationary until all boot chimes and camera self-checks conclude.
Step 2: Perform a Complete IMU Recalibration
An unlevel or thermally drifted IMU will corrupt navigation filtering:
- Allow the drone to cool to ambient temperature.
- Place the aircraft on a stable, verified level surface indoors or out of the wind.
- In the Autel Explorer app, go to Settings -> Flight Control -> Sensor Status -> IMU Calibration.
- Follow the step-by-step physical orientations shown on screen (resting the drone flat, on its left side, right side, nose up, nose down, and inverted as prompted).
- Do not bump the drone or table during calibration steps. If calibration hangs, review Drone IMU Calibration Failed (Universal Master Guide).
Step 3: Calibrate the Compass
Once the IMU is stable, register a fresh magnetic baseline:
- In the app, select Compass Calibration.
- Hold the aircraft horizontally and rotate 360 degrees until the app prompts the next step.
- Hold the aircraft vertically (nose pointing down or sideways depending on app graphic) and complete another 360-degree rotation.
- If the app displays calibration failure, change locations entirely. If failures persist across different sites, see Autel Error Code 102030 Compass Calibration Failed.
Step 4: Verify Satellite Acquisition Before Takeoff
Never launch an Autel drone while the app reports fewer than 12 satellites or shows a yellow GPS indicator:
- Wait 60 to 90 seconds on the ground for the receiver to download fresh satellite ephemeris data.
- Once the satellite indicator turns green and the app announces that the Home Point has been recorded, the navigation filter has achieved a valid 3D fix.
In-Flight Emergency Response: Handling ATTI Mode
If the Navigation System Error occurs while the drone is in flight, the aircraft will instantly switch to Attitude (ATTI) mode:
- What happens: The drone stops braking automatically when you let go of the control sticks. It will drift horizontally at the speed and direction of the wind. Altitude hold via the barometer usually remains functional.
- How to respond: Maintain visual contact with the drone. Manually apply gentle counter-stick pressure against the wind drift. Fly the drone back toward your position and perform a manual landing. For a deeper understanding of flight dynamics during sensor loss, review Drone Entering ATTI Mode: Why It Happens and How to Fly.
Hard Stops: When to Ground the Aircraft
Do not take off if:
- The Navigation System Error persists after both IMU and compass have been successfully calibrated in an open field.
- The sensor health dashboard shows red indicators for the barometer or internal IMU buses.
- The drone experienced a crash and now exhibits erratic sensor readings while stationary.
- The drone attempts to circle or oscillate horizontally during hover (a behavior known as “toilet bowling”). This indicates critical sensor disagreement; land immediately.
